What Does The Court Service Unit Do?

The Court Service Unit provides intake services for the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. It also completes investigations. Including predisposition and custody reports.

A predisposition report includes various background information about a child including family history, previous services and prior charges, if any. It gives the judge useful information for making a final decision in the case.

Intake at the Court Service Unit is the process of taking information from a person who needs to request some action from court. The information is then filed with the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The following is a list of the types of petitions that the Court Service Unit can help you file.

Petitions regarding juveniles:

  • Minors alleged to have committed delinquent acts
  • A child in need of services
  • Involuntary commitment of Juveniles to a psychiatric hospital
  • Emancipation
  • Neglect and abuse
  • Abortion consent

Petition regarding domestic relations:

  • Custody
  • Visitation
  • Support
  • Household abuse (Protective Orders)

Who Handles Probation and Parole for Juveniles?

The Court Service Unit also supervises probation and parole for juveniles and young adults up to 21 years old. Once a case is decided, a juvenile is assigned a probation officer, given probation rules, and given required meeting times with the officer, who monitors his/her progress over a period of time.
